June 2014 Spotlight - Lucy & Merry Miller

This month’s spotlight is on Lisa Margherio & Merry Miller’s mixed breed, Lucy Lu,OAP.OJP, CGC. Anyone that has gone to many of the Quincy Kennel Club classes knows Lucy with her stunning merley coat & bouncy personality. Lucy is the first non- member mixed breed to attain an agility title using skills learned in the QKC agility classes.
Merry & Lisa adopted Lucy from the Columbia Humane Society when she was 10 weeks old after seeing her photo on Petfinder. They drove the 100 miles to pick up what was supposed to be a medium sized when grown Australian Shepherd mix. Lucy, however, kept growing to a whopping 25.5 inches tall and 80 lbs. As Merry quips “I think there is a lot of collie, moose and a little mule mixed in.” Lucy lives up to her name with her winning personality. According to Merry; “Lucy is a fun loving energetic dog who loves other dogs and people. She has made friends with several of the other dogs at the Kennel club, some of who run out of the training ring to greet her.”
Merry & Lucy were taking obedience classes when Merry saw the agility classes. “. I was amazed at seeing the dogs going over the A-frame, teeter totter and weave polls. It looked like fun and I knew Lucy would love it and it would offer her the exercise she needed.” They joined the agility classes in 2009, started competing in 2010 & earned their first title in 2012.
Merry has this advice for those just starting or wanting to start agility: “Be patient!!! With the right kind of training, love, praise and treats (Lucy will do anything for a treat) your dog will do anything you ask them to do. Remember that you and the dog will make mistakes and learn from them. Most of all have fun with your dog. They love you unconditionally and just want to have fun with you so have fun.”
Sadly, Merry & Lucy have been sidelined for awhile and are greatly missed. Hopefully, they will be back training and competing again soon
